Dr. Kiflu Gebremeskel

Dr. Kiflu Gebremeskel

ERITREA

Prison address:
Wengel Mermera Prison

Asmara, Eritrea

Dr. Kiflu Gebremeskel was the founder and senior pastor of Southwest Full Gospel Church and a member of the executive committee of the Full Gospel Church of Eritrea. The Full Gospel Church of Eritrea is one of the country’s largest Pentecostal networks which comprises about 150 house church groups.

Kiflu has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and served as a mathematics lecturer and a department head at the University of Asmara before changing careers in 1999.

In May of 2004, Kiflu and two other Christian leaders (Pastors Haile Naizghe and Tesfatsion Hagos) were arrested. At the time of their arrest, police confiscated the keys to their church offices and threatened their wives.

It is believed that Kiflu is being detained in the maximum-security Wengel Mermera Central Criminal Investigation and Interrogation Center. He has never been charged with a crime, no trial date has been set and he is not allowed visitors. He is, in effect, being indefinitely detained.

Kiflu is married and has four children. There have been reported sightings of him at various hospitals throughout the years, under tight security, for what is believed to be stress-related hypertension and diabetes.

**Latest update (November 2023): According to family, Dr. Kiflu is presently out of the hospital and his needs are being provided for by the local church and through the generous donations of Christians outside of Eritrea. His family asks that we pray for Dr. Kiflu’s health and safety as prison conditions are very bad.

Timeline

  • May 23, 2004: Arrested at 5 a.m. at his home in Asmara.
  • October 2001: Reported sightings at a hospital in order to receive medical treatment.
  • October 2023: Currently detained indefinitely. No trial date pending.

Prayer Needs

Pray that Pastor Kiflu remains committed to the call of Christ on his life and that he will respond in love to the evil shown by his aggressors. We know that God’s love will open doors for him to share the Gospel even in prison!

Ask God to comfort Pastor Kiflu’s family who has not received updates about their husband/father’s health and are not allowed to visit. We pray that the Lord protects his health and keeps him strong.

Pray that the Lord fill his wife’s and children’s hearts and minds with the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

Haile Naigzhe

Haile Naigzhe

ERITREA

Prison address:
Wengel Mermera Prison

Asmara, Eritrea

In 2002, the Eritrean government shut down and banned all religious groups except the Orthodox, Catholic, and Lutheran churches, as well as Sunni Islam. As a result of the government’s action, banned churches were forced to go underground. Eritrean officials then responded by undertaking a campaign to locate the underground churches and arrested their leaders.

Haile Naigzhe, chair of the Full Gospel Church of Eritrea, was one of many arrested in the hopes of destroying the Suffering Church. Tragically, Haile disappeared into the Eritrean prison system. He has never been charged with a crime, never been granted access to a lawyer, and never been given a trial date.

It is believed that Pastor Haile is being held in a maximum-security prison, the Wengel Mermera Central Criminal Investigation Center, along with 21 other Christian leaders. Persecuted believers who have been released from custody state that prison conditions are severe and that some persecuted believers are being held in windowless underground cells or metal shipping containers.

Due to safety concerns, Pastor Haile’s wife and four children live outside of Eritrea. They have never been allowed contact with their husband/father. In 2019 it was reported that Pastor Haile was in good health. Latest update (November 2023): According to friends, Pastor Haile is presently out of the hospital and his needs are being provided for by the local church and through the generous donations of Christians outside of Eritrea. His family asks that we pray for Pastor Haile’s health and safety as prison conditions are very bad.

Sanctioned religious groups, in spite of being recipients of the government’s “favor,” have also suffered persecution. One example was the detention of Abune Antonios, Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, who died in confinement in 2022 at the age of 94. Patriarch Antonios was one of the longest-serving prisoners of conscience in the Horn of Africa, spending sixteen years in solitary confinement for his resistance to government interference in the church.

Timeline

May 23, 2004: Arrested by police in Asmara and taken to Police Station #1. Eventually transferred to the Wengel Mermera Central Criminal Investigation Center with other Christian leaders. Disappeared.

October 2023: Currently detained indefinitely without charges. No known trial date is pending.

Prayer Needs

After 19 years in detainment, pray that Pastor Haile be released from prison. Pray that the Lord finds a way to not only set him free, but also finds a way to reunite him with his wife and children who have grown up without the support of their beloved husband and father.

Ask the Lord to encourage Haile’s heart with the verse from Romans 8:28 that states, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Pray that Pastor Haile’s faith grow ever stronger so that in every cell block he enters, he will leave behind him men who now know Christ because of his courageous testimony.

And finally, pray that Pastor Haile can honestly count these last 19 years “worthy of every torture, beating, starvation, suffering and the separation from loved ones in order to be a pastor to the thousands of prisoners his path has crossed.” (quote from Pastor Haralan Popov in Tortured for His Faith)

Prison address:
Central Jail Adiala
Adiala Road
Rawalpindi, Punjab
Pakistan 46606

Shagufta, a nurse by profession, was part of a WhatsApp group called ‘Pure Discussion’ for Christian teachers and preachers.

In 2020, members of an extremist Muslim group joined ‘Pure Discussion’ and collected what they deemed to be “blasphemous material.” They then submitted the messages to the authorities by filing an information report with the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cyber Crime Unit.

As a result, Shagufta was arrested at her home in Iqbal Town, Islamabad, and currently stands accused of disseminating blasphemous content. During the time of her arrest, police seized electronics and also arrested her husband and two of her sons. Her husband and sons were eventually released.

The FIA’s case against Shagufta is lodged under Sections 295-A, 295-C (which carries the death penalty), 298, 298-A and 109 of Pakistan’s Penal Code.

UPDATE: Shagufta has been sentenced to death at the conclusion of a three-year trial. Her attorney, Rana Abdul Hameed, will be filing an appeal with the superior court. In Pakistan, over 90% of blasphemy cases bring harsh judgements at the trial court level due to pressure from Islamic fundamentalists. In a statement Hameed shared, “If you examine all cases of 295-C, the trial courts tend to convict the accused even if the cases against them are very weak. This is due to the pressure of the religious groups and fears of mob violence. If you analyze all cases of 295-C, you will see that all the convictions of the trial court are overturned by the superior courts. I met her after the judge issued the sentence and can confirm that she is very hopeful of a positive outcome from the superior courts.”

Timeline

  • September 2020: Alleged blasphemous content forwarded in the WhatsApp group.
  • July 29, 2021: Shagufta arrested and officially charged with “using derogatory, disgraceful, immoral, and filthy comments and remarks designed to willfully despoil and outrage religious feelings, beliefs, as well as principles.”
  • September 2023: Currently held indefinitely. No date has been set for her trial to begin.
  • September 2024: Judge Majoka sentenced Shagufta to death, convicting her under Section 295-C of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. She has also been fined 300,000 rupees (equal to $1,077).

Prayer needs

Health: Shagufta has been in solitary confinement ever since her arrest. Though she is allowed out of her cell for exercise, pray that she will hold onto the Lord’s peace, joy, and comfort during these difficult days. Pray that she will not give in to depression or anxiety and that the Lord would strengthen her faith, building her up so that she can serve Him with joy in prison.

Family: It has been reported that her family has gone into hiding due to safety concerns. Pray that her husband and sons remain safe, and that God provide for their needs.

Justice: Join us in praying that the death sentence would be overturned on appeal. Ask the Lord to give the judges at the Superior Court courage to see through the lies, recognize the weaknesses of the case, and release Shagufta to her family.

Noman Masih (also known as Noman Asghar), a member of the Anglican Church of Pakistan, was accused by authorities of showing a group of people blasphemous images on his phone in a public park at 3:30 a.m. on June 29, 2019. Noman maintains that the charges against him are completely fabricated and without merit. While the police report states he was arrested at the park after the incident, neighbors and Masih’s family testify that he was actually taken from his home.

Earlier on the same day, Noman’s cousin, Sunny Waqas, was taken into custody 174 km away on a separate blasphemy charge. According to Pakistani law, if suspects have not been formally charged and their trial has not concluded within two years, they are eligible for bail. Based on this, the court granted bail to Waqas on 17 January 2023. It has been reported that Waqas jumped bail and is no longer living in Pakistan.

Timeline

  • February 20, 2024: On grounds of double jeopardy, a judge in Bahawalnagar acquitted Noman of a second death sentence in a case based on the same incident as the Bahawalpur case. He remains on death row for his conviction in the first case.
  • August 2024: While imprisoned, Noman passed his high school board examinations. He plans to continue his education and has registered to take his intermediate examinations within the next two years.

PAKISTAN

Prison address:
District Jail Jhelum

Punjab, Pakistan 49600

Qaisar Ayub (45) and his brother Amoon Ayub (42) have been accused of blasphemy under Section 295-C of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which carry a mandatory death sentence. The charges stem from a complaint over a blog with alleged blasphemous material. The brothers maintain the blog was created by Qaisar’s former Muslim friends after a personal dispute, using the brothers’ name and contact details to implicate them.

Amoon, a music teacher in Lahore, and Qaisar, who has a wife and three children, ran a small Christian charity, the United Christian Organization (UCO), and operated a website sharing news about their activities. Their lawyers argue there is no evidence linking either brother to the blog or its content.

  • November 2014: Qaisar arrested and charged with “insulting the Prophet Muhammad” (Sec. 295-C PPC).

  • June 2022: Appeal denied; death sentence upheld.

  • Latest: The Pakistani High Court has scheduled a hearing in the brothers’ case.

Prayer needs

Pray that the court will schedule the hearing without delay.

Pray for God’s protection over Qaiser, Amoon, and their families during this time.

Pray that the judges will act with fairness, seeking justice and showing mercy toward Qaisar and Amoon.

Tehran, Iran

Joseph Shahbazia is an Armenian-Iranian house church leader currently detained in Evin Prison after being rearrested in February 2025.

In 2020, Iranian agents from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) raided Christian homes and house-church fellowships in Tehran, Karaj, and Malayer. During one of these raids, Joseph and five converts to Christianity—who were all listed on an arrest warrant—were forcibly taken from their meeting place to their homes. There, agents conducted searches for Bibles, Christian literature, and mobile devices. Approximately 35 Christians were arrested or interrogated during the operation, though most were eventually released, except for Joseph and Malihe Nazari, a leader in Tehran’s One-Hearted Women Church.

Joseph was charged with “acting against national security by promoting Zionist Christianity” and labeled a national security threat. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. In 2023, his sentence was reduced to two years, and in September 2023, he was granted a pardon and released. However, in February 2025, he was rearrested on unknown charges.

Timeline

  • June 2020: Arrested at a house church meeting in Tehran.
  • August 2020: Released on bail.
  • June 2022: Found guilty of “leading an organization that aims to disrupt national security.”
  • August 2022: Began serving a 10-year sentence in Evin Prison.
  • February 2023: Granted a retrial.
  • May 2023: 10-year sentence reduced to two years.
  • September 2023: Granted a pardon and released.
  • February 2025: Rearrested on unknown charges.
  • April 2025: Joseph’s mother passed away on April 14, but he was denied a prison furlough to attend her funeral. His wife, Lida, is missing and is assumed to have been detained as well.

Prayer needs

Pray for Joseph’s physical and emotional strength while he is detained in Evin Prison. Pray that God grants him peace and courage during this challenging time.

Pray for Joseph’s wife, Lida, who is currently missing. Ask for God’s protection and, if detained by police, for her quick release.

Pray for Joseph’s legal situation, that he may be granted justice. Pray for his release and for the safety of all Christians facing similar persecution in Iran.

Hakop Gochumyan

Hakop Gochumyan

IRAN

Prison address:
Evin Prison, Ward 209
Tehran Province
District 2
Tehran, Iran

In the summer of 2023, Hakop Gochumyan, an Armenian citizen, and his wife Elisa, a dual Iranian Armenian citizen, were on vacation in Iran visiting Elisa’s extended family. Their two children, ages 7 and 10, were with the couple.

On the evening of August 15, as Hakop and Elisa visited friends in a suburb of Tehran, police raided the property, confiscating personal items and Christian literature. Agents then took the couple to Elisa’s grandmother’s house where the family was staying while in Iran and conducted a search of that property as well.

After the search was completed, Hakop and Elisa were arrested and taken to Evin prison where they were placed in solitary confinement and intensely interrogated. Elisa was eventually released on bail in October. Hapok has remained in prison. Reports state that his trial is to begin in January 2024.

Over 100 Christians were reportedly arrested throughout the summer of 2023 in what is being called an organized campaign against Believers.

Elisa is the daughter of Pastor Rafi Shahverdian (born in Iran on May 28, 1961, died in Armenia on January 19, 2023). Pastor Rafi was the founder and head pastor of People of God Church in Yerevan since 1993. He was also an author and founder of the first Christian kindergarten in Armenia, as well as an international speaker.

Timeline

  • August 15, 2023: Hakop Gochumyan and his wife Elisa arrested in Pardis, a suburb of Tehran.
  • September 2023: The couple’s two children are returned to Armenia with the help of a relative.
  • October 19, 2023: Elisa released on bail. Returned to Armenia to join her children.
  • January 7, 2023: Hapok’s trial to be held on charges of “propaganda against the state through the promotion of Christianity.”
  • February 2024: Sentenced to 10 years for illegal Christian activity and a fine of 50,000,000 tomans (approximately $850). Hakop’s lawyer appealed the ruling.
  • July 2024: In June Hakop’s appeal was denied and the 10-year sentence for “engaging in deviant proselytizing activity that contradicts the sacred law of Islam” will stand.
  • May 2025: In a letter from prison, Hapok stated that he has been subjected to psychological violence, the lives of his family have been threatened, and that he was prevented from  meeting with staff from the Armenian embassy and with his lawyer.

Prayer needs

It is a well-known fact that prisoners undergo extreme suffering and torment at the hands of guards while imprisoned at Evin Prison.

Therefore, pray that the Lord protects Hakop’s life and grants him the faith and courage to be a light in a very dark place.

Keep Hakop’s wife and children in prayer. Though Elisa comes from a strong Christian family in Armenia, being a single mother to young children, separated from her husband and worried over his physical and spiritual condition is a very heavy burden to carry. Our prayers will help to lighten her load.

Nay Blang

Nay Blang

VIETNAM

Prison information not available

Nay Blang, 48, from the eastern coastal province of Phu Yen, is a member of the Ede ethnic group in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. He is a member of the Central Highlands Evangelical Church of Christ (CHECC) which the Vietnamese government refuses to recognize as a legitimate religious organization, rather considering it a “reactionary” organization.

In May 2023, Blang was arrested and, according to local media sources, accused of using home fellowship meetings to “gather forces, divide the national unity bloc, incite secession, self-rule, and establish a separate state for ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands.” He was also accused of “providing false information about freedom of religious belief, slander, distorting religious policies, and violating the interests of the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.”

In January 2024, Blang was found guilty of “abusing democratic freedoms” and sentenced to 4 years and six months in prison.

Blang’s lawyer was not present during the trial. North Carolina-based Pastor Aga, who founded the CHECC, accused Phu Yen province police of forcing Blang’s family to sign a document that canceled Blang’s contract with his lawyer.

Christians from the CHECC have been systematically harassed by authorities for years. This is the third time that Blang is being persecuted for his religious convictions and activities.

Timeline

  • 2005: Sentenced to five years and six months for “undermining the unity policy.”
  • 2010: Released from prison and sent to an educational facility for 2 years for “abusing the rights to democratic freedom and freedom of belief to entice and incite others to violate the law, interests of the State, legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals.”
  • 2012: Released from educational facility.
  • August 2022: Met with a diplomat from the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese authorities harassed Blang, wanting to know what had been discussed at the meeting.
  • September 2022: Scheduled to meet with a religious delegation from the US State Department, however Vietnamese security agents prevented Blang from traveling to the meeting.
  • May 18, 2023: Arrested on accusations including “abusing democratic freedoms” for his affiliation with the unrecognized and unregistered CHECC and holding in-home religious meetings for fellow members.
  • January 26, 2024: Trial held. Sentenced to 4 years and six months in prison for the crime of “abusing democratic freedoms” while holding religious meetings in his home.

Prayer needs

Pray that the US State Department’s Commission on International Religious Freedom will aggressively advocate on behalf of Nay Blang and all others from the CHECC that have been harassed and imprisoned in recent years.

Pray that the Lord comforts and helps Blang’s family during his current imprisonment.

Pray that God encourages Blang in his faith, strengthening him to withstand the trials that lie ahead. Ask the Lord to use him to minister to all the men in his prison bloc.

He was charged under Russian law for publicly encouraging people to resist government authorities, using his position as a pastor and sharing his message online. In a livestreamed sermon delivered shortly after President Putin announced the partial mobilisation of Russia’s reservists in September 2022, Romanyuk shared his conviction that the invasion of Ukraine was not a conflict Christians should take part in.

In his final statement to the court, he stood by his sermon, saying it reflected his personal beliefs as a clergyman about the sanctity of life.

Pastor Romanyuk is currently being held at a detention centre in Noginsk, near Moscow, and plans to appeal the verdict to the Moscow Regional Court.

Vyacheslav Reznichenko, 23, is a Baptist from a small village in Russia. He has a wife, Elena,  and a small child.

In September 2022, he was drafted into the Russian army. When ordered to fight in the war against Ukraine, he refused, explaining that his faith does not allow him to use weapons or take human life.

Because of this, he was taken to court and accused of disobeying orders. In June 2023, a military court in Vladivostok sentenced him to two and a half years in a low-security prison. Vyacheslav maintained his innocence, arguing that he should have been allowed to do peaceful civilian work instead of fighting.

In August 2023, the Pacific Fleet Military Court confirmed the sentence. In September 2023, Vyacheslav was sent to the prison colony to serve his time. Just two days later, his baby turned four months old.

When faith is forbidden, Bibles are the greatest gift that a persecuted Christian can receive! £10 provides one persecuted Believer or seeker in a Muslim-majority country with a new Bible. £50 guarantees one imprisoned Christian can listen to God's Word on a solar-powered audio reader that can be shared with fellow prisoners.

Help Imprisoned Christians

Imprisoned Believers often suffer from severe physical deprivations which result in serious health problems. A donation of £50 provides one prisoner with a month's supply of life-saving medication, warm clothing and nutritious food.

Support a Persecuted Pastor

Pastors in countries hostile to the Gospel need our support so that they can continue to minister the love of God in their hurting communities. £75 allows one pastor to pay his rent, buy food, and cover his transportation costs while serving God in countries hostile to the Gospel.

Aid to Persecuted Families

For many families suffering Christian persecution it is a daily struggle to simply put food on the table. Bless a persecuted family of an imprisoned pastor. £50 will help feed a family of four for a month.
